Today we observe V-Day, a worldwide campaign that seeks to end violence against women. Every 90 seconds, someone, somewhere in America, is sexually assaulted. Violence against women continues to be a devastating problem in this country. We need a leader with a proven record of standing up for women´s rights. Governor Dean has taken action on behalf of victims of violence, and we must take action too. Women For Dean is sponsoring a letter-to-the editor campaign that gets the word out about the seriousness of this issue, and about a man who has a fantastic record of leadership in this area. Write a letter to your local paper and tell your community about Howard Dean. Together, let´s show Americans that Howard Dean is a champion of women´s rights, and that he has stood up for victims of domestic violence. Governor Dean has an exemplary record of countering domestic violence in Vermont. While Howard Dean was Governor, the rate of childhood sexual abuse decreased by half. Through public education, a implementing a 24-hour domestic violence resource hotline, giving time off to victims for seeing counseling, medical assistance, or alternate housing, Howard Dean stood up for victims. In addition, Vermont now requires abusers to pay child support and living expenses for spouses who request court protection. Howard Dean was the 2002 recipient of the Healthy Families Visionary Leadership Award presented by Prevent Child Abuse America. Howard Dean made Vermont a safer place.
